Paul VI senior Jonquanae Cole was more than willing to do the heavy lifting Thursday night against Good Counsel in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference girls' basketball title game at American University's Bender Arena.
The 6-foot-4 center put the Panthers on her broad shoulders, scoring 16 points, hauling down 14 rebounds and, finally, hoisting the championship trophy to the rafters after top-ranked Paul VI held off No. 15 Good Counsel, 49-47.
In the final six minutes, the North Carolina State recruit made a series of key plays — including a screen to pick off two Falcons by herself and a crucial hook shot that gave the Panthers a lead — to lift her team to its second consecutive conference championship.
Moments after Panthers freshman Kate Klimkiewicz tied the score with a floater and pressured the Falcons into a turnover, the Panthers found Cole on the block. It was by design.
